The Rover 200 Coupe – Model Range

6th October 1992

The Rover 200 Coupe is the new ‘flagship’ of the Rover 200 Series and brings new dimensions of performance and style to Rover’s medium cars range.
The range provides a distinctive style and road presence befitting the traditions of the Rover marque, and, in 2.0 litre turbocharged form, it is the most powerful and fastest accelerating production Rover ever built.
With exceptional levels of interior refinement and performance, and an impressive range of standard features such as T-bar glass roof, power assisted steering, ABS on two-litre models, electric front windows, infra-red remote control central door locking, comprehensive alarm system and alloy road wheels with locking wheel nuts, the Rover 200 Coupe represents a highly specified and exclusive product, keenly priced between £14,495 and £18,315.

Three Model Line-Up

The Rover 200 Coupe is available with three engine types, 1.6 litre (111 PS), 2.0 litre T Series (136 PS) and 2.0 litre T Series Turbo (200 PS).
None of the Rover 200 Coupe derivatives display rear marque or derivative badging other than the Rover shield logo mounted in the centre of the tailgate.

COMPREHENSIVE STANDARD FEATURES

The specification of the Coupe range is comprehensive and includes a combination of both interesting and convenient features fitted as standard across the model range.

Alarm System

Electric central door locking is standard across the range and is activated by an infra-red remote control. The same infra-red remote arms the standard fit alarm system featuring both perimetric and volumetric protection, i.e. it detects forced entry through doors, bonnet or boot and is also activated by changes in air movement within the car – for example, if a window is smashed.
When the alarm is activated, the engine is immobilised. The system is the same as that fitted to Rover 800, which recently won the BVRLA Security Award. A similar alarm is fitted as standard to all Rover 200 and 400 models for 1993. On these ranges the infra-red remote and volumetric sensor are optional.

T-Bar Glass Roof

One of the many special features characterising the Coupe is the T-bar glass roof. The glass panels can be tilted or removed independently of each other and for a virtual ‘top down’ feel, both glass panels can be removed completely along with the T-bar. The panels stow safely in the boot in a tailor-made protective cover fixed neatly to the boot side.
The glass is an advanced, semi-reflective design that restricts the transmission of solar heat into the passenger cabin to only 6%.
A titanium coating is applied to the inside of the glass by a special ionisation process and enhances the Coupe’s interior comfort without the need for a sunblind.

Advanced ICE

All Rover 200 Coupes feature electronic-tune three-band stereo radio/stereo cassette players with security code theft deterrent, auto reverse, Autostore and four speakers with integral front tweeters.
220 Coupe models are fitted with the latest generation R750 system which includes the latest RDS EON (Radio Data System Enhanced Other Networks). With EON the unit can broadcast local traffic information even when tuned to national stations.
Optional at extra cost on all Coupe models is the top quality R950 audio system with additional features including Dolby, music sensor system, chrome/metal tape selection and high power amplifier. Additional integral tweeters are fitted in the rear and the system can be combined with a 6-disc CD autochanger as a further option. Controlled from the console mounted radio/cassette player, the autochanger is located beneath the front passenger seat, out of sight but easily accessible.

Luxury Interior

From the use of fine quality materials to the traditional elegance of burr walnut veneer, the Rover 200 Coupe cabin provides full four seat comfort, having individually shaped rear seats.
In the 216 Coupe, the seats are trimmed in Ash Grey ‘Silverstone’ fabric complemented by grey velour side rolls and backs, whilst the Rover 220 models are distinguished by Ash Grey leather side rolls.
Optional at extra cost and providing a special touch of luxury, leather seat facings are available in either Ash Grey or Stone Beige.
The steering wheel is adjustable for height, and the sports front seats have lumbar support adjustment.

The 1.6 Litre 216 Coupe

The 1.6 litre model is designed to appeal to the cost conscious Coupe buyer. Priced at £14,495, the 111 PS Coupe will achieve a 0-60 mph time of 9.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 120 mph.
Seating four passengers in total comfort, the 216 offers genuine 16-valve performance and a comprehensive feature specification including:

  • Positive centre feel power steering
  • Ventilated front disc brakes

The 2.0 Litre 220 Coupe

This model features the T Series two litre 16 valve engine which is introduced in 200 and 400 Series for 1993. It replaces the M16 unit used in previous models. The 220 Coupe is priced at £16,670.
In naturally aspirated form, the 16-valve T Series produces 136 PS at 6000 rpm and a top speed of 127 mph. 0-60 comes up in 8.2 seconds and, with class leading levels of refinement, offers customers more of a balance between very competitive performance and elegant sporting lines.
An abundance of low down torque also ensures superb driveability and through-the-gears performance without the need for constant gear changing.
Over the 216 Coupe, the 220 features:

  • Rear disc brakes
  • Anti-lock braking system
  • Front fog lamps
  • R750 RDS ICE
  • Leather seat borders
  • Boot mounted body coloured spoiler
The 2.0 Litre Turbocharged 220 Coupe Turbo

The flagship of the range, the 220 Coupe Turbo represents the true driving enthusiasts’ car. Full blooded sporting performance comes from the T Series 2.0 litre 16-valve engine with turbo- charging producing 200 PS at 6000 rpm. The fastest-ever production Rover achieves 150 mph and a 0-60 mph time of only 6.2 seconds.
A car with this level of performance requires handling to match, an expectation fulfilled by the fitment of Torsen torque sensing traction control, uprated suspension and anti-lock brakes as standard.
Priced at £18,315, the new 220 Coupe Turbo represents the epitome of Rover’s sporting heritage projected into the 1990s to create a car of unique style, prestige and power.
Features of the Rover 220 Coupe Turbo over the naturally aspirated 220 include:

  • Torsen torque sensing traction control system.
  • Unique 6-spoke ‘Turbo’ alloy road wheels with locking wheel nuts.
  • The latest 195/55 X 15ZR Michelin Pilot tyres.
  • Leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob.
  • Turbo designation on rear applique panel.
